Artist Statement
There are many questions in life that could never be answered.
Many philosophers have spent countless hours debating the meaning
of life, ¡§who are we?¡¨ and ¡§where did we come from?¡¨. Jostein
Gardner, a philosopher and a writer, described the Joker in a
pack of card as a thinker, a loner that separated himself from
the rest of the pack. He might have excluded himself by choice,
but most card games do not require the Joker and it seems that
his absence is un-noticeable.
He (the joker) is placed in the same pack as the
other cards, but he does not belong there. Therefore he can be
removed without anybody missing him.¡¨
The Solitaire Mystery, Jostein Gardner (Phoenix 1997)
